I have a degree in music, magna cum laude, with concentrations in piano and theory (study of how music is put together). Current students range in age from 6 to 65.

Music being played includes everything from "Mary Had a Little Lamb" through various hymns, jazz, pop, rock, movie, Disney, and folk numbers to such classical numbers as the Pachelbel "Canon, Debussy "Arabesque". Chopin preludes, Beethoven "Moonlight Sonata,,etc.

I recognize that everyone has his/her own favorite styles and attempt to make sure we study a healthy concentration of those while "taste-testing" as many other types of music as possible. The skills need to become independent, such as note reading and interpreting both popular and classical styles, will be taught to all students to he best of their (and my) abilities, although not always at the same rate of speed or in the same order.

Those interested in learning further theory, composing, chording from a fakebook, etc. can have these included in the lessons by indication an interest. No student is required to perform in public, but I do make opportunities available in which any student who feels ready to try her/his wings can ease in performing in a way that is hopefully both fun and non-threatening.  In this, as in learning the instrument, there's a lot to be said for proceeding as close to your own "comfort level" as possible.

I like new teaching ideas but have been around long enough to know that not every "cutting edge technique" really does what it claims to.  I'll try to make this as much fun as any given student twill allow me to do.  Every student winds up teaching me something new. Hopefully it's mutual.
